Ayrel Clark-Proffitt moved to Salt Lake City in 2012. Rental homes were always based on proximity to public transit, and she and her family eventually bought a house in Ballpark because of its character, central location, and access to TRAX. Ayrel left journalism in 2011 to pursue a career in public service, with a particular emphasis on sustainability concerns. She is the sustainability engagement manager at the University of Utah, where she develops and implements initiatives that promote a culture of environmental, social, and financial sustainability among the University of Utah community. She connects with varied groups and departments across campus to educate and expand sustainable behaviors. In her work at the university, she regularly draws on her experience in journalism, using her skills in writing, designing, and asking questions to create and evaluate efforts. Ayrel spent a decade working for newspapers, closing out her career as a senior designer/artist for the Arizona Republic in Phoenix.
