Poonam Kumar is a communication expert and strategist with a decade of experience keeping the public informed and in the know. In her current role, she is a Communication Specialist for Salt Lake City Corporation, where she uses various methods to make government communication more transparent, relatable and accessible. Her passion lies in multicultural communication where she can use various media platforms to create inclusive content that represents and resonates with a wider global audience.

Kumar is the host and producer for SLCtv’s “Capital City News” a bi-monthly government access program, which reaches nearly 100,000 residents in Salt Lake City. In her role, she covers all things related to City government, including news, press conferences, interviews and events. She consults various City departments on communication and social media strategies to increase engagement and awareness in the City. 

Before her work on and off-camera for SLCtv, she was a Communication Content Manager and Community Relations Coordinator for the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office. From 2003 to 2011, Kumar was a Community Outreach Coordinator for KUED Channel 7, PBS affiliate for Utah. She graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism and a Minor in Ethnic Studies. 

Outside of work, Kumar serves as a Communication and Media Committee Member for UN2020, a United Nations (UN) Civil Society organization working to advance global dialogue on multilateralism as part of the UN’s 75th anniversary in 2020. Kumar has also served as the Chair of the Salt Lake County Council’s Diversity Affairs Board, Communication Chair for the Utah Nonprofit Association Board and a member of the University Neighborhood Partners Board.
